Medical Specialists Launches Medical Specialists University (MSU)

Medical Specialists Launches Medical Specialists University (MSU)

Alexander Stemer, M.D., in the Medical Specialists Pharmacy

Munster, IN (PRWEB) March 09, 2012

As a result of U.S. healthcare data showing the increasing demand patients have to be more involved in healthcare decision making and their desire to be more knowledgeable about their health, Northwest Indiana multi-specialty physician group Medical Specialists has created Medical Specialists University (MSU).

MSU is Medical Specialists’ newest education initiative that will offer free educational healthcare seminars to the public. Class topics will cover a variety of medical issues. Some topics slated for early 2012 includes diabetic foot & wound care, pediatric nutrition & obesity and depression & anxiety.

According to the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project, searching online for health information is one of the top three most common online activities. Their research also found that of all U.S. adults who go online, 59 percent use the internet to obtain health information. That number significantly increases for women, those in their 20s and those with higher education and incomes.

“We know that patients increasingly want access to health information,” said Alexander Stemer, M.D., president and CEO of Medical Specialists. “Unfortunately, there is too much incorrect and unreliable information on the internet. To answer the call for accurate health information, our classes will always be led by a board certified physician or registered professional.”

Medical Specialists University kicks off on Thursday, March 29, 2012. The first class will focus on Diabetic Foot and Skin Care.

Medical Specialists is a unique healthcare organization comprised of highly trained and compassionate primary care and specialty care physicians and surgeons. Providing the highest quality healthcare to residents of Northwest Indiana since 1978, Medical Specialists brings university level medical care to the community setting. No matter where you live in Northwest Indiana, there’s a Medical Specialists provider nearby.

Chrysalis Services for Girls & Women Celebrates National Women’s Health Week

Orangeburg, SC (PRWEB) May 1, 2010

Chrysalis Services for Girls & Women is joining the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health in celebrating National Women’s Health Week. On May 15, Chrysalis Services for Girls & Women will hold a women’s health seminar, where women from Orangeburg and the surrounding areas will be able to learn about women’s health, nutrition and fitness.

The women’s health seminar will feature guest speakers who will discuss how women can create healthier lifestyles. During the seminar, participants can learn how to sign up for participation in The Woman Challenge, a program that encourages women to incorporate at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of physical activity into their lives on a weekly basis. Chrysalis Services for Girls & Women is sponsoring “Team Chrysalis” for The Woman Challenge and will have online and in-person activities to encourage and support its team members.

“National Women’s Health Week is important because it encourages women to take time for their health,” says Marcia Davis Taylor, President/CEO of Chrysalis Services for Girls & Women. “Women are often the caregivers for their families and, as a result, forget to make their own health a priority. With National Women’s Health Week, we remind women that they too need to visit the doctor, prepare and consume nutritious meals, and incorporate regular physical activity into their day-to-day routine.”

National Women’s Health Week is a nationwide initiative that calls attention to the importance of women’s health. During the week, individuals, families, health organizations, businesses, communities, and the government come together to raise awareness about women’s health issues and educate women about simple steps they can take for longer, healthier and happier lives.

National Women’s Health Week kicks off on Mother’s Day, May 9, and will be celebrated through May 15, 2010. National Women’s Checkup Day — a day where women across the country are urged to visit their doctor — will be held on May 10. In addition, The Woman Challenge, an eight-week online physical activity program, will be held May 9–July 3.

ACNM Applauds CMMI for Strong Start Funding of Alternative Models of Prenatal Care

ACNM Applauds CMMI for Strong Start Funding of Alternative Models of Prenatal Care

Silver Spring, MD (PRWEB) February 10, 2012

The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) applauds the leadership of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) in announcing Strong Start—a new national campaign aimed at reducing preterm birth and offering more than $ 40 million in grant funding to test alternative models of prenatal care.

The initiative was announced on Wednesday by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the Family Health and Birth Center in Washington, D.C. Founded by certified nurse-midwife Ruth W. Lubic, CNM, EdD, the birth center has reduced preterm birth and improved maternal and newborn outcomes in medically underserved areas of Washington, D.C.

Strong Start will meet its goals by scaling up efforts to implement strategies already shown to reduce preterm birth, most notably avoiding early elective induction before 39 weeks. It will also fund investigation of innovative models of prenatal care—specifically birth centers, group prenatal care, and maternity care homes—that hold promise for addressing the physical, emotional, and psychosocial factors behind preterm birth.

“We are pleased that CMMI is focusing a national spotlight on maternal and newborn health and the ways care and outcomes can be improved. These new resources will enable midwives and other maternity care providers to implement strategies that reduce preterm birth on a broader scale,” said ACNM President Holly Powell Kennedy, CNM, PhD. “ACNM will play an active role in the public awareness campaign, and we encourage members to apply for funding.”

ACNM members — certified nurse-midwives (CNMS) and certified midwives (CMs) — are well-positioned to play an active role in this initiative. Nationally, CNMs and CMs attend more than 300,000 births every year in hospitals, birth centers, and homes with proven safety and excellent outcomes.

“Research supports the use of midwife-led care models during pregnancy, including birth centers and group prenatal care. We look forward to working on this agenda in future public-private partnerships,” said Kennedy.

For more information, please contact Melissa Garvey, ACNM communications manager at (240) 485-1826 or via e-mail at mgarvey(at)acnm(dot)org.

The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is the professional association that represents certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) in the United States. ACNM promotes excellence in midwifery education, clinical practice, and research. With roots dating to 1929, our members are primary care providers for women throughout the lifespan, with a special emphasis on pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecologic and reproductive health. ACNM provides research, administers and promotes continuing education programs, establishes clinical practice standards, and creates liaisons with state and federal agencies and members of Congress to increase the visibility and recognition of midwifery care.

Should the FDA Recall Yaz and Yasmin?

Should the FDA Recall Yaz and Yasmin?

(PRWEB) December 06, 2011

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) primary responsibility is to ensure that all medications it evaluates and approves are safe for public use. The pharmaceutical companies presumably extensively research and test new medications and provide this data to the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation Research (CDER). Unfortunately, the CDER conducts no research or testing, rather it simply relies on the data provided to it by the drug company. Ennis & Ennis, P.A. questions this process. What if the manufacturer presents incomplete information? Or excludes possible side affects because the company deems it “statistically unlikely”? These oversights, coupled with the pressure from drug manufacturers to accelerate the approval process, make the FDA especially vulnerable to premature approval of new products. Further compounding this problem is that a large portion of the FDA’s funding comes directly from the drug companies themselves, which creates an astounding conflict of interest.

A classic example of the FDA’s failure as our government watchdog is the current litigation over the birth control pills Yaz/Yasmin/Ocella (hereinafter Yaz), which have been proven to increase the risks of strokes, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolisms, and gallbladder disease. These lawsuits allege that this drug has gravely or fatally injured thousands of women. Furthermore, according to the former FDA commissioner, Bayer’s unit researchers found increased reports of blood clots in users of its Yasmin birth-control pills and the company withheld the information from U.S. regulators, which was reported by Bloomberg News. David Kessler, the former FDA commissioner, in a document unsealed today in federal court in Illinois, said Bayer didn’t include an analysis “that demonstrated an increase in the U.S. reporting rate” for venous thromboembolism, or clots, in a 2004 review of Yasmin safety provided to the agency. The data revealed “Bayer presented a selective view of the data, and that presentation obscured the potential risks associated with Yasmin,” Kessler said.

Attorney Holly Ennis of Ennis & Ennis, P.A. asks, “Could this have been prevented if the FDA was not rushed and pressured to approve new medications by Bayer and other companies? Shouldn’t the FDA require stringent post-marketing studies of these products? And, more importantly, what is the FDA doing about Yaz?”

Bayer’s Yasmin was first approved for use in the United States in 2001. Then in 2006 Bayer’s Yaz was approved as an oral contraceptive and as a medication to treat premenstrual dysphonic disorder (PMDD), which is the most severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). However Bayer aggressively marketed Yaz as a seemingly “miracle drug” that treated all types of PMS symptoms, such as irritability, moodiness, bloating and anxiety, while also eliminating increased appetite and acne. As a result, in 2008 the FDA ordered Bayer to pull their television ads wherein Bayer overstated the pill’s effectiveness and minimized the serious risks associated with it. Bayer went on to spend $ 20 million on corrective spots. Interestingly though, according to TNS Media Intelligence, Bayer spent more than $ 270 million on TV and magazine advertising between 2007 and 2010. In effect, Yaz was the best-selling birth control pill in the U.S. for 2008 and 2009 and was Bayer’s second best selling product last year generating nearly $ 1.6 billion in sales.

More importantly, Yaz products contain drospirenone, a synthetic hormone, which is linked to a six-fold increase in the risk of venous thromboembolism, a formation of clots in the lower leg that can become loose and travel to the lungs. This risk is compared with a three-fold risk in women using older contraceptives containing levonorgestrel. Further, there is no evidence that Yaz is superior to older, safer birth control pills.

From 2009 – 2011, there have been over seven published studies finding drospirenone significantly increases the risk of blood clots in women. In fact, it has been found that levonorgestrel, a hormone used in older, first generation birth control pills, had the lowest risk of blood clots, had the same effectiveness in pregnancy prevention and was the safest option. Ennis inquires, “If the efficacy of Yaz is the same as the “older, safer pills” and studies raised the question of Yaz safety in the summer of 2009, why has it taken the FDA this long to convene? Over these last two and half years, how many woman have taken Yaz or Yasmin and suffered these devastating side effects?”

Clearly the FDA is aware of the dangers of these third and fourth generation birth control pills. The FDA not only has reviewed findings from several epidemiologic studies evaluating the risk of blood clots containing drospirenone but has also conducted its own studies. These studies also showed a significant increase in the risks of blood clots and other injuries from drospirenone-containing birth control pills and the FDA “remains concerned” about these increased risks. As such the FDA has scheduled a joint meeting with two advisory committees on December 8, 2011 to discuss these risks.

Given the information widely known regarding Yaz, clearly the FDA is aware that Yaz is nearly twice as likely as other oral contraceptives to cause blood clots and other health consequences and has not been shown to be at all superior or provide other major benefits. That begs the following questions: Why is Yaz still on the market? Why hasn’t the FDA put a black-box warning on the label? Should the FDA recall Yaz and Yasmin? The real question is: Will the FDA protect Bayer’s profits or women’s safety?

Holly Ennis is a Florida attorney who concentrates her practice in representing clients nationwide again pharmaceutical companies and medical device companies. She has represented clients who have suffered adverse side effects from Yaz, Yasmin, Vioxx, Fosamax, Avandia, and Zyprexa, as well as clients who have been affected by the Depuy Hip Implant recall. Vita-Flora Health Introduces BIO-V? — A New Probiotic Supplement for Women?s Health

Vita-Flora Health Introduces BIO-V™ — A New Probiotic Supplement for Women’s Health

Lakewood, CO (PRWEB) August 03, 2011

Vita-Flora Health today announced the worldwide introduction of BIO-V™, a newly-formulated probiotic supplement for women. BIO-V™ is the only product of its kind to use the BIO-tract® delivery system, which more effectively balances pH and flora in the vagina, essentially eliminating an entire range of women’s health issues.

“Bio-V is an all-natural breakthrough for women’s health,” says Beth Avedis, president and CEO of Vita-Flora Health, the parent company. “Women have suffered from yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, feminine odor and urinary tract infections since time began. We are pleased to announce that this new formulation and delivery system will — finally —help prevent and eliminate these problems for millions of women.” Because the product works in the digestive tract, it is also a boon to colon health.

Avedis continues, “A growing body of research is establishing the powerful benefits of taking probiotics, but the stumbling block — for many brands — is that the amount of probiotics that actually make it through the digestive system are so minute, they are virtually ineffective.” In fact, the FTC filed a complaint* against Dannon (the manufacturer of Activia) for their misleading ads, which claimed that one serving a day was enough to produce the advertised result.**

“Without some kind of innovation, we’d be facing the same criticism,” says Avedis. Through years of research and trials, the BIO-tract® delivery system was developed, which encapsulates the live probiotics and protects them from gastric acid destruction. BIO-V™ is the only product of its kind to feature this technology, and was recently presented at the AAPS (American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists). The patented process also renders the product shelf-stable.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases claims that nearly 75% of adult American women have had at least one vaginal yeast infection in their lifetime, and 40-45% of those women have had two or more episodes. According to the CDC, nearly 30% of women between the ages of 14 and 49 have some form of bacterial vaginosis. The proliferation of douches, sprays, creams and perfumes to address the common complaint of “feeling unfresh” is a clear indicator of the vast sweep of the feminine-odor issue. Ironically, it is these very products which contribute to the pH imbalance and flora insufficiency that cause the problem in the first place, creating a frustrating cycle.

“We hope this is the beginning of the end for so many women who suffer from these problems,” says Avedis, who adds that there is a 110% guarantee of satisfaction on the initial purchase of BIO-V™.

UNFPA Head Asks World Leaders to Put Women?s Health at Heart of Development Priorities

UNFPA Head Asks World Leaders to Put Women’s Health at Heart of Development Priorities

United Nations Population Fund

New York, NY (Vocus) September 20, 2010

UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid today called on world leaders to increase funding for reproductive health, including family planning, and place women’s health at the centre of their national plans.

“Now is the time to move from speech lines to budget lines,” said Ms. Obaid at an event during the MDG Summit which started today at the United Nations. “Women deliver for their families, communities and nations, and now it is time to deliver for women. No woman should die giving life. There are still 1,000 women who die needlessly every day from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. There are still 215 million women with an unmet need for family planning and 2 million women suffering from the devastating childbirth injury of obstetric fistula.”

“Investments in reproductive health pay high dividends and advance productivity, economic growth and the rights of women,” said Ms. Obaid, stressing: “The health of women is not the focus of the health sector alone. The health of women depends on planning and investments across many sectors—in education, health, nutrition, gender equality, and infrastructure.”

“Roads and electricity, for example, should be directed towards health centres to support women and families,” Ms. Obaid emphasized. “National plans should prioritize community access to an integrated package of affordable and essential health services, including family planning, maternal health care and HIV prevention and treatment.”

Ms. Obaid assured world leaders that UNFPA was committed to helping nations strengthen their health systems and achieve universal access to reproductive health by 2015.

“We are working with WHO, UNICEF, UNAIDS and the World Bank to reduce high rates of maternal and newborn deaths in high priority countries,” said Ms. Obaid. “Together with the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition, UNFPA aims to expand family planning to 100 million women by 2015. We are supporting national counterparts to train and deploy midwives, and also to prevent and treat fistula.”

“UNFPA fully supports the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health to be launched by the UN Secretary-General on Wednesday to save 16 million lives by 2015,” Ms. Obaid concluded.

Ms. Obaid received an MDG Lifetime Achievement Award in New York on the eve of the Summit, for promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women. The MDG Awards are given annually to honour exemplary contributions towards the development goals.

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.
