New York, NY (PRWEB) February 13, 2012

Snoring Isn’t Sexy, the web’s best way to find a dentist to treat snoring and sleep apnea, announces the launch of monthly surveys at its new facebook page. Those who “like” the page and answer the survey questions are automatically entered to win valuable prizes.

Snoring can be an early indicator that an airway is not functioning properly during sleep. This can be a warning of a more serious condition known as sleep apnea. 20 to 40 million people in the United States suffer from obstructive sleep apnea and the medical problems associated with it (heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, stroke, diabetes, ED) as well as daytime sleepiness which can lead to vehicular and job related accidents.

Yet 85 – 90% of those with sleep apnea are undiagnosed and untreated. The public remains largely unaware of the seriousness of the problem that even simple snoring can cause and even more are unaware that specially educated dentists can help.

“Millions of people who suffer with obstructive sleep apnea remain undiagnosed and untreated.” said Laurence Barsh, DMD, President and Founder of Snoring Isn’t Sexy. “Thousands more cannot tolerate their prescribed CPAP device. Dentists who have received training in oral appliance therapy for snoring and sleep apnea can screen for sleep apnea and, working with physicians, treat many instances of sleep apnea.”

“The problem has been” continued Dr. Barsh “that the public remains unaware of dentistry’s role and responsibility in this field. Social media, including Facebook and Twitter, is now one of the best ways to reach the public and a survey, in particular, provides the opportunity to actively involve people in the learning process. A prize awarded when the survey is completed encourages participation.”

About Snoring Isn’t Sexy

Snoring Isn’t Sexy, LLC was founded in 2008 by Laurence I. Barsh, DMD, a dentist who has been involved with sleep medicine since 1992 and who now devotes full time to educating the public about dentistry’s role and responsibility in the recognition and management of snoring and sleep apnea. Dr. Barsh and the dentists associated with Snoring Isn’t Sexy, LLC feel strongly that management of sleep-breathing disorders is a shared responsibility of both the medical and dental professions.

Snoring Isn’t Sexy, LLC consists of independently owned and operated affiliated offices. Visit SnoringIsntSexy.com for a directory of all participating dentists.

SnoringIsntSexy.com continues to be accredited by Health On the Net Foundation (HON). HON is the “leading organization promoting and guiding the deployment of useful and reliable online medical and health information, and its appropriate and efficient use,” according to HON.

Silver Spring, MD (PRWEB) February 10, 2012

The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) applauds the leadership of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) in announcing Strong Start—a new national campaign aimed at reducing preterm birth and offering more than $ 40 million in grant funding to test alternative models of prenatal care.

The initiative was announced on Wednesday by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the Family Health and Birth Center in Washington, D.C. Founded by certified nurse-midwife Ruth W. Lubic, CNM, EdD, the birth center has reduced preterm birth and improved maternal and newborn outcomes in medically underserved areas of Washington, D.C.

Strong Start will meet its goals by scaling up efforts to implement strategies already shown to reduce preterm birth, most notably avoiding early elective induction before 39 weeks. It will also fund investigation of innovative models of prenatal care—specifically birth centers, group prenatal care, and maternity care homes—that hold promise for addressing the physical, emotional, and psychosocial factors behind preterm birth.

“We are pleased that CMMI is focusing a national spotlight on maternal and newborn health and the ways care and outcomes can be improved. These new resources will enable midwives and other maternity care providers to implement strategies that reduce preterm birth on a broader scale,” said ACNM President Holly Powell Kennedy, CNM, PhD. “ACNM will play an active role in the public awareness campaign, and we encourage members to apply for funding.”

ACNM members — certified nurse-midwives (CNMS) and certified midwives (CMs) — are well-positioned to play an active role in this initiative. Nationally, CNMs and CMs attend more than 300,000 births every year in hospitals, birth centers, and homes with proven safety and excellent outcomes.

“Research supports the use of midwife-led care models during pregnancy, including birth centers and group prenatal care. We look forward to working on this agenda in future public-private partnerships,” said Kennedy.

For more information, please contact Melissa Garvey, ACNM communications manager at (240) 485-1826 or via e-mail at mgarvey(at)acnm(dot)org.

The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is the professional association that represents certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) in the United States. ACNM promotes excellence in midwifery education, clinical practice, and research. With roots dating to 1929, our members are primary care providers for women throughout the lifespan, with a special emphasis on pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecologic and reproductive health. ACNM provides research, administers and promotes continuing education programs, establishes clinical practice standards, and creates liaisons with state and federal agencies and members of Congress to increase the visibility and recognition of midwifery care.

Malibu, CA (PRWEB) February 07, 2012

February 6, 2012 – Dr. Akikur Mohammad, Founder of Inspire Malibu, recognized by many as the top addiction treatment center in Malibu, California and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California (http://www.USC.edu), announced today that based on the rapidly growing number of post-bariatric surgery patients entering addiction treatment programs with severe addiction issues, there needs to be a much greater effort in the medical community to alert the public and weight loss surgery candidates about addiction transference.

“Addiction transference is essentially when addicts transfer one addiction to another and is nothing new. Cross addiction and addiction transference is nothing new to the addiction community; however, with the recent surge in bariatric procedures across the country, the number of post-bariatric patients entering drug addiction treatment for non food related addictions is soaring and that clearly indicates that the system is flawed,” said Dr. Mohammad.

Dr. Mohammad continued, “It is this simple, the clinics and medical professionals screening candidates for bariatric procedures are only preparing patients for the physical component of the procedure and neglecting the emotional component, which is not just irresponsible, but potentially deadly. While weight-loss surgery may help patients control their weight and food consumption, many end up struggling with entirely new compulsive disorders such as alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling addiction or compulsive shopping.” Mohammad added, “It is criminal that these so-called medical professionals are not properly screening-out candidates susceptible to addiction transfer or better preparing them with the proper tools to avoid cross addiction and frankly, they need to have their licenses revoked. Until then, my team and I will continue to alert the public about addiction transference and the potential dangers of ill-advised bariatric procedures.”

Jason Ackerman, Owner of Albany CrossFit and CrossFit Clifton Park

Albany, New York (PRWEB) February 03, 2012

Albany CrossFit and CrossFit Clifton Park, part of an insurgent fitness movement that is changing the way people around the world think about nutrition, health and fitness, today announced some remarkable success stories 30 days into its 90-day diet and fitness challenge.

“We suspected we were on to something when over 120 of our members signed up for the challenge, but we’ve been completely blown away by the results to date,” said Jason Ackerman, owner of Albany CrossFit and CrossFit Clifton Park. “I can’t believe the life the challenge has taken on. Our members have banded together to form a remarkable support system.”

Challenge participants record improvements in diet, athletic performance and body composition and blog about their experiences. They take before and after pictures and track improvements in benchmark workouts including: Deadlifts (1 rep max); a 2000 meter row; and a short circuit-based workout.

Winners will receive free memberships and prizes when the competition ends on April 1, 2012.

“But this is not really about winning or losing a competition,” said Caleb Nelson, a coach at Albany CrossFit. “That’s not what’s driving everyone. It’s really about becoming your best self. Our participants are going to end up happier and healthier. That’s the real win.”

Lisa Rudd, a devoted athlete and one of the challenge participants, agrees. “Every day I take a challenge. Every day I strive to be better. Sometimes it gets hard. But my CrossFit experience is tremendous and positive. What keeps me focused is being able to track progress in all my workouts and feel better every day.”

The Albany CrossFit gym began modestly four years ago in cramped and shared space with a handful of members. It expanded to a second location in Clifton Park over the summer. Renovations are now underway to expand the original location. Together, both gyms have over 500 members.

Why the success for a very tough workout regimen?

“It’s the community feeling and the caring,” says Albany CrossFit and CrossFit Clifton Park owner Jason Ackerman. “We treat everyone who walks through the door like an athlete, regardless of their current fitness level, and our members are great about encouraging each other. So people are able to go way beyond what they thought possible.”

The workouts focus on natural and functional movements and are different every day. Every workout is coached and the coaches scale the workouts to accommodate different ability levels. CrossFituses barbells, kettlebells, pull up bars and many body weight movements including squats and pushups.

And it’s a bit like the TV series “Cheers”: everyone knows your name. Members strike up friendships, go out together and travel together. A few have even gotten married.

Hollywood, Florida USA (PRWEB) February 02, 2012

Prolexic Technologies, the global leader in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection services, today announced that it has launched a new customer program called “Protected by Prolexic.” Prolexic will offer incentives to new and existing customers who sign up to display the Protected by Prolexic logo on their web sites.

“By joining the Protected by Prolexic program, businesses will be sending a strong, clear message to customers, competitors, and even cyber attackers that they are taking the threat of DDoS attacks seriously enough to secure the services of the gold standard in DDoS mitigation,” said Paul Sop, chief technology officer at Prolexic. “When they see this logo, online customers will have added peace of mind that a DDoS attack will not bring down sites they rely on for shopping, membership services, entertainment, and other online activities.”

The Protected by Prolexic logo is a registered trademark that belongs exclusively to Prolexic. To prevent unauthorized duplication and misuse of the logo, Prolexic will provide each customer a unique HTML code that hyperlinks to a numbered logo hosted by Prolexic.

“The Prolexic name is known all over the world as the leader in DDoS mitigation and many of the businesses we serve already use our recognized reputation as a selling point to their customers,” Sop said. “Displaying the Protected by Prolexic logo will give these businesses an instant competitive advantage through association with the ‘gold standard’ for DDoS mitigation.”

“We have been proactive and added premium DDoS attack protection from Prolexic and that has increased the value of our web hosting service,” said Lisa Retief, Vice President of Engineering at Yola (http://www.yola.com), a global web site builder and hosting service serving small businesses. “Prolexic’s protection provides peace of mind to Yola and our customers from around the world.”

Certain terms and conditions surrounding the use of the Protected by Prolexic logo apply. Businesses that are interested in participating in the Protected by Prolexic program can learn more by logging on to http://www.prolexic.com/protected or by contacting protected(at)prolexic(dot)com

About Prolexic

Prolexic is the world’s largest, most trusted Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) mitigation provider. Able to absorb the largest and most complex attacks ever launched, Prolexic restores mission critical Internet facing infrastructures for global enterprises and government agencies within minutes.
